Research on IBD, Fertility, and Pregnancy

Research is essential to our understanding of IBD and its effects on fertility and pregnancy. All of the information we are able to provide on this site is the result of research efforts in this area. See links below for ways you can support research on IBD, fertility and pregnancy.

Thinking of becoming pregnant in the next 15 months? The Women with Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Motherhood (WIsDoM) registry is an international study exploring the effect of IBD and IBD-related surgery on fertility in women with Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. Women ages 18-45 with IBD in the US and Canada may be eligible to participate.

Already pregnant? The Pregnancy inflammatory bowel disease And Neonatal Outcomes (PIANO) registry is a national study of women with IBD and their children. The study explores the effect of IBD medication use in pregnancy on short and long term outcomes in the patient’s offspring.

The MELODY Trial is a study exploring whether an IBD patient’s diet in the third trimester of pregnancy positively affects the bacteria in their baby’s gut.

The Exploring the Role of Plastics and Toxin in Intestinal Inflammation (PLANET) Study aims to understand the impact on microplastics on bowel inflammation and the microbiome in women with IBD and their babies.
